Misconception about Skincare Myths

There is a number of dos and don'ts on our daily skincare routines, but following all of these supposedly sound advice may do more harm than good. So which one is true, and which one is not? Today, let us look at how to protect your face and body by learning the facts behind these popular misconceptions.

SPF 30 provides double the sun protection of SPF 15
SPF stands for sun protection factor, and the SPF number relates to the amount of time it would take for the skin to burn. In other words, SPF 15 means sunbathers can bask 15 times longer without getting sunburn than they would without sunscreen. Higher SPF numbers prevent a greater percentage of rays from reaching the skin, but the differences between 15, 30 and 45 are smaller than you'd think. For instance, SPF 15 blocks about 93% of the sun's rays, while SPF 30 blocks 97% and SPF 45 blocks 98%. So doubling the number doesn't double your skin's protection, especially since the average person doesn't apply as much as she should.

Hot water opens pores
Despite cleansers, scrubs and other skincare products claiming to have pore-opening powers when paired with warm H2O, this advice may not be that accurate. According to Glenn Kolansky, MD, Director of the Advanced Dermatology Surgery and Laser Center in Tinton Falls, NJ, hot water loosens hardened dirt, oil and makeup within pores, allowing for better cleansing. Still, you have to monitor the temperature. Washing your face with too-hot water can strip skin of natural oils and possibly lead to irritation and dryness.

Makeup with built-in SPF is as effective as sunscreen
As convenient as sunscreen-infused products are, relying on them for sun protection is definitely a big no-no. Due to makeup's thickness and how it binds to the skin, it would take almost 14 times the normal amount of powder used and seven times the normal amount of foundation used to get the desired amount of SPF. Although proper sun coverage varies for everyone, a good role of thumb: Pair SPF 15 sunscreen with SPF 15 cosmetics.

Washing your face will cure acne
You may have heard this way too many times, but washing your face constantly throughout the day does not aid in reducing acne. In fact, it strips your skin of essential oil and makes your skin extremely dry, parched and susceptible to acne, Restrict to washing your face only twice or thrice in a day.

Finally, if you come across a tip that seems harmless and good, it pays to do your due diligence and double-check it before adapting it as part of your skin ritual. While many focus on looking good, skin safety is actually the first and most important step in achieving good skin.

Essential Food for Beautiful Skin

As the saying goes, you are what you eat. Skin covers the largest part(and definitely the most visible organ) of the body. Here are some foods that do superior job in enhancing your complexion.

Salmon
Salmon slows down ageing. It contains astaxanthin, a carotenoid that improves skin elasticity, so you'll have fewer fine lines.

Avocado
Avocados are not just for eating! They are good choice to make if you are looking for ways to enhance your complexion. It contains the amino acid, Niacin. Niacin has an anti-inflammatory property and this will help keep your skin healthy and soothe skin irritations.

Eggs
Protein helps repair cells that have suffered free radical damage. Eggs, a complete source of protein, also contain biotin, an essential vitamin that protects against dry skin.

Cranberry
Cranberry is considered important among the most common complexion enhancing foods, They are rich in flavonoids that can effectively decrease skin redness due to rosacea. Drinking cranberry juice can be even more effective compared to your complexion enhancing creams.

Other than food, do remember to get regular exercise, have enough sleep, and avoid prolonged sun exposure to minimise damage!

Is your skin age older than your real age?

Our skin ages over time as it loses its firmness and elasticity. Although it is not possible to halt the aging process, there are ways to slow it down and maintain our youthful look for as long as we can.

1. Exfoliate twice a week before you go to sleep. Gently exfoliate with small circular motions to remove your accumulated dead skin and unclog your pores. This preps your skin for better absorption of post-cleansing skincare products.

2. Do not over cleanse your face so that it feels taut and tight. It strips your face off the essential moisture and oils that keep your skin healthy and balanced. While you need to remove impurities from your skin, cleansing your face twice daily would be ideal.

3. Apply a face lift mask that helps to firm and tone your skin. Cleanse your face and remove all traces of makeup, pat it dry before you put on the mask. This can be done once to twice a week.

4. Lather some night cream before sleep. It nourishes and repairs your skin overnight, locking the moisture in your skin so that you wake up looking fresh.

5. Apply sunscreen and reduce exposure to the harmful UVA and UVB rays from the sun that leads to premature skin ageing.

6. Keep your body hydrated by taking in lots of water, fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as reducing your intake of sodium.

7. Include foods with plenty of Omega-3 fatty acid in your diet. It helps your skin to retain moisture and smoothen your wrinkles, enabling a healthy and youthful look.

By following these simple tips, don't be surprised the next time you meet your friends and are surprised, and ask you, "Why do you look younger?"
